Musician. A saxophonist, he was a founding member of the Stax Records' sessions musicians band known as "The Mar-Keys" who backed Otis Redding. Later, he co-founded the horn section ensemble "The Memphis Horns." While attending Rust College, Newman got his start in music as a member of B.B. King's first ensemble. Following service with the United States Army during the Korean War, he toured with Jackie Brenston and Sam Cooke. In addition to Otis Redding, Newman recorded with Wilson Pickett, Etta James and Aretha Franklin.
