Aged 12 years, 10mos, 24dys; Drowned in the Sangamon River Waterworks with his aunt Margaret Ann Thompson, aged 19. There is no stone for Fred in this plot.

The capsizing of a rowboat on the Sangamon river yesterday morning resulted in the death of two people by drowning. Two others had miraculous escapes from the same fate. Mrs. Margaret Lancaster Thompson, wife of George Thompson, 134 West Grand avenue, north, and Fred Thompson, aged 12 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Thompson, 939 North Klein street, were the victims. Frank Thompson and his father, E. A. Thompson, narrowly escaped meeting death with the others. The accident happened about 11 o'clock at the dam, a short distance below the pumping station, north of the city. Fred Thompson, his brother, Frank Thompson, and Mrs. Margaret Thompson were in the boat when it upset. E.A. Thompson, father of the two boys in the boat, came near losing his life in his efforts to rescue his youngest son from drowning. The bodies of the drowned have not been recovered.

The occupants of the boat were rowing up stream, and were caught in the under current near the dam. Without a moment's warning the boat overturned. Fishermen on the bank of the river threw a pole to Frank Thompson, and he safely reached the shore. Fred Thompson was carried to within fifty feet of the shore by his father when the undercurrent struck them and the child was carried from his father's back. The father was caught in the current also, and had a terrible struggle for his life. He was tossed about in the eddy, but finlly reached a calm spot in the river, and swam to the shore. Nothing was seen of the woman after she fell into the water. Her body was caught in the rushing waters as they poured over the dam and carried down stream.

The Thompson family were enjoying a family reunion on the banks of the river when the boat capsized. There were twenty-one people in the party. The families represented at the reunions were: S.D. Thompson and wife, 134 West Grand avenue, north; George Thompson and wife, of the same number; F. S. Thompson and family, 136 West Grand avenue, north; W. E. Thompson and family, residing north of the city; E. A. Thompson and family, 939 Klein street; and Frank Thompson and family.

Fred Thompson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Thompson, would have been 13 years old next month. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, David and Frank, and a sister, Hattie, all residing at home.
