Susan Morrison Avery lived somewhat in the shadow of her family. She was the first wife of Alphonso Calhoun Avery. Two of their five children bore the names of their parents.

Her husband was an attorney and a major in the 6th North Carolina Regiment, Confederate States Army. Her brothers and brothers-in-law were also involved in the CSA. Her modest stone is placed to the left of her husband's large one.

It is generally known, however, that the women left behind maintained hearth and home, as was the case in most wars. Susan Avery was no exception.

Contributed:
MARRIED,
At Cottage Home, N. C., on the 27th ult., by the Rev. Dr. Kirkpatrick, President of Davidson College, ALPHONSO C. AVERY, Esq., of Burke county, and SUSAN WASHINGTON, daughter of Rev. Dr. R. H. Morrison.
—Published in Fayetteville Semi-Weekly Observer (Fayetteville, North Carolina), March 28, 1861, p. 3.

Extracted from her death notice in the Morganton Star (Morganton, NC) 7 May 1886:
"Mrs. Sue Morrison Avery, wife of Judge A.C. Avery and daughter of the Rev. Robert Hall MOrrison, D. D. , entered into rest on the 25 of March." The obituary describes her religious life in some detail.
