He was named for his maternal grandfather. At the onset of the Civil War he was a student at Virginia Military Institute and would have graduated in the class of 1865
However, he left school and soon was a 2nd Lt. and an aide-de-camp to his famous brother-in-law General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson.

He was with Stonewall when he was wounded near Chancellorsville. He would be with his sister, Mary Anna Jackson at Guinea Station when Stonewall died.

He transferred to General Ramsuer's 57th North Carolina Infantry in September 1863. By 1865 he was Captain of Company F.

He would be wounded twice. The second near Petersburg resulted in the loss of a foot.

He was also suffering from T.B. and recuperated for 4 years after the war in California. In 1869 he returned to North Carolina, where he became a planter and ran the Mariposa Cotton Mills.
