Professional Baseball Player. He played in the Negro Leagues during the 1900s and 1910s. He was born as Joseph Scotland to Alex Scotland and his wife Georgia Jackson Scotland in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 8, 1882. He was educated locally and later worked as a candymaker in Montgomery, Alabama, before pursuing a professional baseball career. He played the position of centerfielder, leftfielder, and starting pitcher, with the Birmingham Giants making his professional baseball debut with them in 1907. He continued to play with the Birmingham Giants from 1907 to 1909. The 5'11" and 175lbs centerfielder, leftfielder, and starting pitcher, also played for the Cuban Giants in 1908, the French Lick Plutos from 1913 to 1914, the Indianapolis ABCs in 1914, the Louisville White Sox in 1915, the Chicago Union Giants in 1916, and the Indianapolis Jewell's ABCs from 1917 to 1919. His 162 Game Average consisted of 115 Games Played, 634 Plate Appearances, 559 At Bats, 65 Runs Scored, 128 Hits, 14 Doubles, 7 Triples, 4 Homeruns, 62 Runs Batted In, 50 Stolen Bases, 0 Caught Stealing, 54 Walks, 0 Strikeouts, 0 Intentional Walks, 6 Hit By Pitch, 15 Sacrifice Hits, 0 Sacrifice Flies, 0 Grounded Into Double Plays, .229 Batting Average, .303 On Base Percentage, .302 Slugging Percentage, .605 On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage, and 72 Adjusted On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage. After leaving his professional baseball career, he worked as a laborer including as a moulder's helper for the American Foundry Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was drafted during World War I, but he never served. He passed away from acute lobar pneumonia in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 10, 1923, at the age of 41. Following his death, he was buried in Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was married to Lillian Scotland. The couple had no children together.
