Enlisted on 9/3/1862 as a Captain. On 9/16/1862 he was commissioned into Co D 24th Reg NJ Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 5/31/1863.


1st spouse: Anna E. Bates (~1832 - 01/02/1890). They had the following chaildren together:

- Hannah Bates


2nd spouse: married Sarah W. Hoeflich (05/1865 - 05/23/1939) on October 19, 1897 in Camden, NJ. They had a daughter Elizabeth (09/13/1899 - 04/12/1989 who married Dwight Sankey Tock
