Herta HOFFMAN (Hoffmann)
maiden name: Pisk
widow of Bruno Hoffman (Hoffmann)
died May 29, 2005

Born in Bruenn
Austrian - Hungarian Monarchy
Kingdom Bohemia
(now Brno, Czech Republik)
Providence was her home for over 50 years upon arriving in 1939 from Linz, Austria, as World War II began to erupt in Europe. Shortly after their arrival, Herta, Bruno and a few close friends decided to help fellow emigres by establishing the RI Self Help Program for Emigres. Ispired by a sense of duty to her fellow man, Herta worked tirelessly as a volunteer at various human service organizations in Rhode Island.

She was president of Hadassah Business and Professionals, ran a Kosher Meals on Wheels Program, was hairman of the NCJW Service to the Foreign Born Committee, worked with Jewish Family Services, died resettlement work with HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), was involved with the Jewish Federation of RI, and was active at Temple Emanu-El.

Community tributes include the Outstanding Volunteer Award of the Jewish Community Center in 1983, the International Institute of Rhode Islands Outstanding Citizen in 1989 and the National Council of Jewish Womens Volunteer Recognition Community Service Award in 1997. Herta was the first Rhode Island Section recipient of NCJWs highest national honor, the Hannah G. Solomon Award, in 1987. Her good deeds are legendary and have been an extraordinary source of assistance and comfort to so many.

Herta was owner of the Arcade Infants and Childrens Shop in downtown Providence until the floods of Hurricane Carol in 1954 forced her to close the store.

The daughter of Alfred and Hilda (Engelmann) Pisk, who perished in Auschwitz, Herta credits her parents for instilling in their children the importance of goodness and concern for others. Her older brother, Theodore Pisk, and his wife, Edith, will miss their daily phone calls, as will her many devoted nieces, nephews and their families in Connecticut, Maryland and Israel. Her sister, Judith Sharir, brother Shmuel Ben-Porat, both of Israel, and their spouses predeceased Herta. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday at her residence at Tamarisk Assisted Living, Warwick. The many challenges of the past several years were made much easier with the help of her guardian angel, Maria Borges.

Funeral service were held at Temple Emanu-El, 99 Taft Avenue, Providence, with Rabbi Wayne Franlin and Cantor Brian Mayer officiating. Interment followed in Lincoln PArk Cemetery, 1469 Post Road, Warwick.

Donations to the Jewish Federation of Rhode Islands Bruno and Herta Hoffman Endowment Fund, Temple Emanu-El, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or a charity of the donors choice would be greatly appreciated.
