Author. He was raised in the Dutch countryside by his parents, where he drew covers for his school newspaper. His parents expected him to join the family's publishing business and he designed and illustrated over 100 posters, 2,000 book covers, and other materials for the company. Some of his best known book covers were for the series of books about little black bears. He even designed and drew the covers for the James Bond books by Ian Fleming and did work for many charities. He wanted to become an artist until he went to London and then to Paris. When he returned to the Netherlands, he studied fine arts in Amsterdam, but soon dropped out of the university because he felt he was not a talented painter. He first invented the book series of Miffy when he saw a small rabbit and drew it for his son during their vacation in 1955. Miffy was at the center of numerous children's books, loved by children around the world. He wrote over 200 children's book and Miffy became his most popular character. Over 85 million books had been sold around the world and were translated over 50 languages. His other books featured characters such as Farmer John, Snuffy Dog, Poppy Pig and Boris Bear. Dick made them that way so the children could use their imaginations. He wrote the last Miffy book in 2011 and retired in 2013.
