Enlisted in Company A, Virginia 7th Cavalry Regiment on 15 May 1861. Enlistment place: Potomac Furnace, VA. Mustered out on 20 Aug 1862 at Brandy Station, VA.

(Edit suggestion) William Potterfield died at Brandy Station and was buried there. His body was never recovered. The marker in the cemetery in Lovettsville is a cenotaph placed in memory of him.
