27 Aug 1962: A member of one of Lebanon County's prominent families was fatally injured early Sunday evening when his automobile struck a bridge abutment in South Lebanon Township, a short distance south of the city. The crash occurred on Wilhelm Avenue at the Cornwall Railroad underpass. Pronounced dead on arrival at the Good Samaritan Hospital was George L. Kreider, 55, 207 E. Poplar Street. Kreider suffered a compound fracture of the left leg, a crushed chest and fractured ribs. Dr. M. M. Meyer, deputy coroner, reported early this afternoon that a certificate of accidental death was issued, following an autopsy performed this morning. The autopsy disclosed that Kreider's death resulted from severe internal hemorrhage and multiple body fractures. Dr. Meyer stated that there were no indications that Kreider had been stricken with a seizure or heart attack. Police Chief George Gettler, South Lebanon Township, reported that Kreider was traveling west on Wilhelm Ave. and was alone at the time of the crash. Gettler said the car crashed head-on into the abutment. The accident occurred about 6:35 p.m. The victim, born at Annville, was a son of the late A. S. Kreider, a former Congressman, and Elizabeth Horst Kreider, prominent Annville residents. He was associated for many years with the A. S. Kreider and Son Company. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the board of the A. S. Kreider and Son shoe factory in Palmyra. Prior to his association with the Palmyra shoe factory, he was vice president of the A. S. Kreider Shoe Company in Annville, and before that was general manger of the former A. S. Kreider Company, which was formerly located at Fifth and Canal Streets. Mrs. Paul Sholley, who resides on Wilhelm Avenue, heard the crash and notified police. Gettler said Kreider was still alive in the wreckage of his car when he arrived on the scene. Kreider was conveyed to the hospital by the First Aid and Safety Patrol Ambulance. Trooper Lloyd Brubaker of the Jonestown State Police assisted in the investigation. It was reported that Kreider was apparently on his way to church and had left home about 6:30 p.m. He attended the Annville schools and graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., and Yale University in 1929. He was a member of the Hebron Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving is his widow, Helena Resovsky Kreider, and two children, George V., Portsmouth, N. H., and Jean, wife of John Cain, San Francisco. Calif. Four brothers and two sisters also survive. They are: Aaron, Elizabethtown; Henry, Lebanon; Clement, Harrisburg; Howard, Annville; Nancy, wife of Cyrus K. Eckert, Mt. Gretna, and Elizabeth, widow of Rodham Kenner, Chevy Chase, Md.
