Alice Neel
May 26, 1919 - June 29, 2023

Alice Torti Neel, age 104 of San Antonio, TX, passed away on June 29, 2023, after a long illness.

She was born May 26, 1919, in Stuttgart, Arkansas to Maurice Leo and Leah Glidewell Torti. She was the oldest of three siblings and was a loving big sister to Polly and Moe. She graduated from Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee where she was an excellent student, receiving many awards in Latin and debate. She graduated from Memphis State University where she also excelled. One professor encouraged her to attend medical school. Instead, she chose to become a medical technologist and support her husband Spurgeon H. Neel's Army medical career. They were married on November 18, 1939.

During her married life she was an exemplary Army wife. Whether this involved hosting events, serving on committees, traveling far and wide, or being a loyal friend and confidant, it was always done with intelligence, warmth, and grace. She was a caring, involved mother to her children and a wonderful grandmother. Volunteering at the Army Medical Department Museum gift shop and St. David's Episcopal Church altar guild were among her many civic engagements. As a testament to her exceptional community service, she was awarded the Yellow Rose of Texas in 1999.

Alice loved all people, animals, flowers, and nature. She treated everyone she met with interest and respect and approached life with unique optimism and dedication as a true Christian and patriot.

She is preceded in death by her husband, MG Spurgeon H. Neel Jr.; son, Spurgeon H. Neel III; sister, Polly Lucas; nephew, William Ray Lucas Jr.; and niece, Sheila Smith. She is survived by brother; daughter; nieces; nephew; grandchildren; and great grandchildren.
