Nancy Kathryn Sutton

August 12, 1929 - June 29, 2023

St George, Utah

Nancy Kathryn Sutton, 93, passed away June 29, 2023, in St. George, Utah. She was born August 12, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, USA to Edwin Lee Numbers and Lovey Elizabeth Trice. Nancy married Herbert Burrows Sutton on July 9, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas. He preceded her in passing on April 29, 2016. She is also preceded in passing by her parents, and brother, Edwin Lee Numbers, Jr.

Nancy is survived by her three children: James Gregory Sutton (Sara), Lisa Ann (Sutton) Teague, and William Arthur Lee Sutton (Gayle); and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In her childhood, Nancy lived in Detroit, Michigan and later moved to Arlington, Virginia where she attended grade school and high school. After high school she enrolled in a trade school where she learned secretarial skills. Nancy knew that she wanted to travel but did not have any money to do so on her own. She went to a travel agency and was told to find a job in the government, because they had the money for travel. She did just that. She secured a job with the State Department and with her Spanish language skills that she learned in high school and recently acquired secretarial skills; she was soon assigned a position in the US Embassy in Peru. She traveled to Peru on a ship, passing through the Panama Canal on her way. It was in Peru where she met her future husband Herb who was working there at the time. The rest, as they say, is history.

Nancy and Herb shared a love for travel and visited many locations across the US, often flying in their private plane (Herb was a private pilot and Nancy an experienced, if unofficial, co-pilot). Their travels also included international visits to Australia, England, Canada, Portugal, Belgium, South America, Baja California, Mexico.

Herb and Nancy lived for a while in their early married years in Mexico City, Mexico. Job and career opportunities for Herb led them to living in the San Francisco Bay area (San Jose, Redwood City, Palo Alto, and Los Gatos) where they started their family and raised their children. Later in their retirement years they lived in Salyer and Paso Robles, California, and then ultimately in St. George, Utah. While living in St. George, they spent many summers escaping the southern Utah heat at their vacation home at Bear Lake, Idaho which became a rendezvous point for many family reunions over the years.

Nancy had many and varied interests. Nancy was involved in some volunteer efforts, including Ming Quong Children's Home in Los Gatos, California. She had a love of sports of all kinds. She was the catcher on her high school softball team (without a mask!), and spent a lot of time following her favorite baseball, basketball, and football teams, and golf pros. She and Herb spent a lot of time together on golf courses at home and all around the world, as golf trips were among their favorite travel activities. Other interests included knitting and needlework, with some of her work still displayed in her vacation home at Bear Lake, Idaho. While living in Salyer, California, Nancy owned and operated a yarn and knitting store. She had a love for pets. She also had a love for adventures, one of which included skydiving at the age of 83!

Nancy will be remembered by her children and friends as a person who NEVER spoke ill of anyone ever and would subtly but effectively change the subject when someone else was doing so in conversation. If there were arguments between her and Herb, they were seldom if ever on display to her children or others. She was truly a very loving and loveable person.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Loving Angel Service Dogs of St. George, Utah.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 7, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Charles City Cemetery, St. Charles, Idaho.
