"A floor stone, at the west end of the nave, bears the following inscription (see Inscription). From what country Joseph came, I could not learn, but do not think it at all improbable that he was the descendant of some petty Chief in Africa, and had been sold into captivity"

Here Leith the body of Joseph commonly called the Black Prince, who was converted to the christian faith, A.D. 1675, and died 1st day if June A.D, 1685, in the hope of a better life."
