Marilynn was born on April 17th, 1938 and passed away on July 20th, 2023 at the age of 85.

Marilynn Thompson Brown died peacefully at her home in Cedar City on July 20, 2023. She was 85 years old. Marilynn was born on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938, in Logan, Utah. She was the fifth of seven children born to Mary Olive Peterson and Seymour Thompson. She grew up on a farm in Clarkston, Utah, until 1951, when the family moved to River Heights. Marilynn graduated from South Cache High School in 1956. She went to Utah State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960.

Marilynn was a district leader on her two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany. When she returned home, she taught at Midvale Junior High School. Marilynn earned a Master of Science degree from Brigham Young University in 1967 and taught at BYU thereafter.

Marilynn married Lorin W Brown in 1968 in the Salt Lake temple. They had seven children together, and lived in many places throughout the U.S. and Europe from Lorin's assignments in the Navy, including Florida, Greece, Italy, Spain, Maryland, New Mexico, California, Virginia, and Illinois. In 1990, Lorin retired from the Navy, and the family moved to Cedar City, Utah, where Marilynn resumed her teaching career. She was an associate professor at Southern Utah University in the home and family sciences department until her retirement in 2002.

Marilynn served three church missions with her husband: as lifestyle missionaries and university professors at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China, in 1997-98; as area welfare agents in Hong Kong in 2003-05; and as family history missionaries in Mons, Belgium, in 2009-10.

Marilynn excelled at five-handed Rook, organizing, playing the piano and organ, and sewing. She made matching Easter and Christmas dresses for her daughters for years. She made quilts for all of her grandbabies. She was an avid reader, as well as a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ. She did her visiting teaching and ministering without fail, and served as Relief Society and Young Women president, as well as in several presidencies, including Primary.

Marilynn is survived by her husband Capt. Lorin W Brown, USN-retired, as well as her seven children: Christopher (Marquelle) of Collinsville, OK; Alexander of Albuquerque, NM; Brita (Cameron) Engh of South Jordan, UT; Benjamin (Victoria) of Bountiful, UT; Anna (John) Lewin of Cedar City, UT; Caroline of Cedar City, UT; and Catherine (Justin Peel) of Draper, UT. She is also survived by her sister Kathleen Behling of Washington, UT, as well as 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Keith, Jenna, Carlos Eugene, Elaine, and George.

There will be a viewing on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Cedar West Stake Center at 725 South 1100 West. The funeral will be at the Cedar West Stake Center on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 11 a.m. There will be a 9:30 a.m. viewing prior to it. Interment will follow the funeral at the Cedar City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. www.mortuary.org.
