Better known as Cardeal da Cunha (Cardinal da Cunha), he was a Portuguese prelate of the Catholic Church and an influential figure of the royal court of King João V of Portugal, of whom he was adviser. He was also Titular-Bishop of Targa, Canon of the Lisbon Cathedral, High Inquisitor of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves, private chaplain of King Pedro II of Portugal and a member of the Council of State.
