In 1910 when Mary was 27 she had been married 5 years, had lost 2 babies and had a 3, 2, and 1 yr old. Four years later, at 31, she had 5 sons and 1 daughter all born in Brooklyn. They moved up to Dutchess Co or Marlboro. Then Fred worked in NYC building the "EL" [elevated subway] where he was killed by a falling beam in 1917. Mary "got the call from a girlfriend he was living with in NYC. So she went right down and got him." She then worked as a live-in Practical Nurse, putting the 3 youngest boys in the Children's Home in Poughkeepsie [an orphanage], Harold in a TB camp and Margaret in a foster home in Rhinebeck. By 1930, probably earlier, they were reunited in a Poughkeepsie apartment and everyone had a job. Mary was hard working and did all she could to take care of her large family.
