Served with a New York Artillery unit during the War of 1812. Was married twice, his second wife, Sarah, being quite a bit younger. Between the two marriages he had a reported 23 children, the last a girl just six months before he passed away. Sarah married twice more (divorced once) and after she passed away in Mandan, ND in 1900 she was transported back to Marshall and buried next to James.
