Obituary
Unidentified Newsclipping - 1883
LAKIN.--Mrs. Prudence Lakin, of Pease Eddy, New York, died on Thursday morning, January 4, 1883, at the extraordinary age of 108 years, 6 months and 4 days. Though she had, several years previous to her death reached second childhood, her faculties were well preserved and her recollections of thrilling events connected with her early history was in many respects interesting and remarkable. She described to the writer, during a visit made two years ago, the incidents connected with the declaration of peace between Great Britain and the American colonies as vividly as if it had occurred but yesterday, and brought back as no other could the romance of pioneer life in new America before the beginning of the present century. Nearly all of her long life was spent in Delaware County, and she died at the homestead, though not in the same house, where she began her domestic experience more than 84 years ago. Her youngest son, Rev. Arad Simon Lakin, of the Alabama Conference, is now 72 years of age, and the sum of the ages of herself and surviving children at the time of her decease was 640 years. What a life! Still, to her it seemed short--the morning and the evening were near together--and in contrast with eternity, what, after all, is a hundred years! During the latter half of her life she enjoyed the peaceful fruit of the Christian faith. Her husband, Jonas Lakin, died many years ago, but it is said that while her strength lasted she always put a vacant chair and an unused plate for him at the family table. Her funeral took place at Hancock, Delaware County, New York, on Sunday, January 7th, 1883 and was largely attended.
