Ada's name in the Atteberry family bible was written Ada Alabama but she later changed it to Ada Annette Atteberry. Ada was the 12th of 16 children born to Thomas Jefferson Atteberry and Melissa Evelygn Johnston Atteberry in 1905 in Berry, Alabama, however only fourteen of the children lived to adulthood. Ada married Clifton Dewitt Shirley when she was 20 years old on 8 Aug 1925 in Cordova, Alabama. She and her husband - who was from South Carolina - had nine children. The earliest picture of her dates to 1906. She is the youngest in the Atteberry Family Photo because little Arora, Gean, and the twins, Thomas and Wilma ("Buster" and "Sister") had not yet been born. When Ada's father wrote his children's names down in the Atteberry family bible, he put them all two years apart, so some of them are wrong there. It is the only document that has all of the children's full names listed on it. Ada traveled to California to visit two of her sisters in the 1970's. She loved keeping in touch with her extended family by mail, phone and visits for many years. She died not long before her 86 birthday and was buried in Mobile, Alabama next to her yougnest son, Clifton Dewitt (jr.).
