Richard Willbanks was a preacher. In 1839 and 1841 he was a class-leader at the Hopewell Church, and at the Dry Pond Methodist Church in Jackson County, Georgia. He was later elected deacon and elder. He became a minister for the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Richard moved his family to Chattooga County, Georgia in 1846 and settled on a farm in Dry Valley on the Walker/Chattooga County line. Here his second son John drowned while bathing in the Chattooga River June 9, 1847 at the age of 18.
In 1850 Richard moved to the area near Trion Factory where he was a member of Penn's Chapel for more than 30 years.
Richard Willbanks suffered from asthma or hay fever. He had several light strokes and had a major stroke a few months before his death. He died January 9, 1884 and is buried in the Wilbanks-Bandy Cemetery, Chattooga County, Georgia. Nancy (Willbanks) Sanders is buried very near her husband. Her marker is on the back of Richards.
