Author and Illustrator. Born in Saint Louis, Missouri, she was the co-author with her mother, Irma von Starkloff Rombauer, of the "Joy of Cooking" which was first published in 1931. Selected by the New York Public Library as one of the 150 most important and influential books of the 20th century. Published by her mother, Marion is best known for the cookbook's illustrations. The friendly, chatty style cookbook is considered as the best selling cookbook of all time. A prominent Cincinnatian, Becker also worked as an art teacher and for Women's Wear Daily. She was one of the founders of Cincinnati's Modern Art Society and became the society's first professional director. Also a gardener and an environmentalist, she was a pioneer in natural gardening and wrote "Wild Wealth" which chronicled her woodland garden at the family's estate. Becker received the Oak Leaf Award from the Nature Conservancy and the prestigious Medal of Merit from the Garden Club of America. Before her death in 1976, she was a recipient of the Greatest Living Cincinnatian Award. Becker and her mother also co-authored a dual autobiography entitled "Stand Facing the Stove" with the title coming from one of their famous quotes from the cookbook. Her son, Ethan Becker, helped to work with the book's several revisions. She was married to John William Becker, an architect.
