Vine Van Gorden was the son of Ira Van Gorden and Mary Agnes (Balaam) Van Gorden. He married Katherine "Kate" Jane Evans on February 12, 1896 in Piedras Blanca, San Luis Obispo County, California.

"RITES HELD FOR CAMBRIA PIONEER. Last rites for Vine Van Gorden, Cambria native-son, were held at the C.W. Palmer Mortuary Monday [July 31] at 2 p.m. under auspices of San Luis Obispo Lodge No. 322 B.P.O.Elks.

Austin Waltz sang "Under His Wing" and "Constantly Abiding," accompanied by Clara Higdon on the organ. Entombment was in the Lawn Mausoleum.

Pallbearers were Herman Pfleghaar, Ivan Stock, Alfred Ricioli, Merle Evans, Howard Evans, Donald Evans. A large number of friends from the up-coast section attended the services."

"Pioneer Resident Dies at Cambria.

Vine Van Gorden, 68, prominent pioneer of Cambria, died Saturday afternoon in his home near that city.

Van Gorden was born in Cambria October 20, 1870, and spent his entire life in that section. He was a son of the late Ira Van Gorden, one of California's early pioneers and a member of the ill-fated Donner party [not correct]. He owned the San Simeon rancho on San Simeon creek.

Surviving relatives are his wife, Kate Evans Van Gorden of Cambria; two daughters, Mrs. Helene Hafley of Santa Barbara and Mrs. Ethel Mathison of Cambria; two brothers, Earl Van Gorden of Cambria and Sherman Van Gorden of Palo Alto; a sister, Mrs. Sally Murray of Los Angeles; and four grandchildren, Joyce and Vina Mathison of Cambria, and Dixon and Doris Hafley of Santa Barbara.

Funeral services were held at the C. W. Palmer Mortuary Monday at 2 p. m. under auspices of San Luis Obispo Lodge No. 322, B.P. O. Elks. Entombment was in Lawn Mausoleum [aka San Luis Cemetery, San Luis Obispo]."
