Lizzie Grey Chandler was never married but worked with children her entire life serving as Superintendent of The Wrights Refuge home for children. At retirement, she was a teacher to the Mentally Challenged children at Holloway Street School. She lived with her sister, Minnie Chandler, and was very much involved in raising three girls: Betty Cash Chambers, Barbara Cash Roberts Long, and Joyce Cash Petersen. She, in fact, officially adopted Betty Chambers and Barbara Roberts Long later in life. She was devoted to Bethany United Methodist church and with many charitable organizations in Durham.
