Elisha was the youngest of 10 children , two of whom died young. The oldest child was born in 1816, so there was a span of 24 years between Elisha and his oldest sibling. His father, a farmer who was also named Elisha, died when Elisha was less than a year old. His mother married Chauncey Nichols sometime between 1847-1850. He was raised in Wayne and Cayuga Counties, NY. His stepfather was a harness maker. Elisha worked as a cooper both before and after his military service.

13 Aug 1862, at age 22, Elisha Watson (Jr) enlisted at Conquest, NY in Company C, 9th New York Heavy Artillery & served 3 years in the Union Army. He started as a private and was promoted to Corporal on 6 April 1864. His pension record indicates that he was AWOL from 17 July to 31 Aug 1864. Mustered out at Washington, DC on 6 July 1865. Physical description was described as 5 ft, 8 in tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark colored hair.

After Elisha returned from military service, he and several other members of his family packed up and headed west, possibly to join his oldest brother Samuel who had already moved to central Michigan by 1860. Elisha and his family members stopped in Allen County, Indiana for a couple of years. Some remained there, but Elisha and others went on to central Michigan. Elisha and his immediate family returned to Allen County, Michigan around 1876 and, in 1882, they went back to Lansing, Michigan where they remained Elisha & his wife had 8 children, only two of whom outlived their parents.
