He was married as the 2nd husband of Zora (Robinson) Hunt (1886–1925) on August 7, 1908 in Franklin County, and she was the daughter of Charley Robinson (1847–1934) and his wife Ellen (Waggoner) Robinson (1852–1933).
Listed as a farmer on his World War I Draft Registration Card, he was later a coal miner. Living in Mercer, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, Buford was 47 years old and and although his Death Certificate listed him as single, he was actually a widower when he died of a combination of pneumonia and flu on May 15, 1929. Burial was four days later in the colored cemetery in Decherd.
