MARJORIE GUNNELL
(1920 - 2024)

Marjorie Burger Gunnell died peacefully with dignity and courage, surrounded by her family members at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, Florida at the age of 103. She was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on May 19, 1920 to George and Erna Burger. Marjorie graduated from Lincoln High School and attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Marjorie married Elias Gunnell, also of Manitowoc, on June 27, 1942. Their marriage was truly a union of two boat building families in Manitowoc. Marjorie was a direct descendent of the Burger shipbuilding family, which formed the original Burger Shipyard in 1863 and Elias' father was a founder and president of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in 1902.

A friend to many, Marjorie had a kind heart, a determined spirit and loving soul. She had impeccable style and carried herself with grace. She cherished her family and maintained close friendships throughout her life. Marjorie was an avid tennis player and a bridge enthusiast. Her summers were spent with her husband and children boating and sailing in Door County, Wisconsin and their winter vacations were spent skiing at various resorts in the United States, Canada, and Europe. After her husband passed away in 1979, she spent her winters in the Florida Keys at the Ocean Reef Club and The Anglers Club and her summers in Ephraim, Wisconsin.

While living in Manitowoc, Marjorie served as a longtime active member of the First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Junior Service League and a member of Clio Book Club.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Kristey Gunnell Peck, Cathy Gunnell Hicks and Marcie Gunnell Hunsaker and her son-in-law, Jerome Hunsaker and her daughter-in-law, Elaine Gunnell.

She was predeceased by her husband, Elias Gunnell, and her eldest child, Skip (Elias Gunnell III) and her son-in-law, Lee Wallace Peck. She had 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Burial services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to The Ephraim Foundation, Ephraim Wisconsin, The First Presbyterian Church or the Maritime Museum, both of Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
