Passing of Pioneer Stage Driver
After two years of suffereing, Merritt Love laid down life's burden and peacefully passed away, early last Sunday morning. Mr. Love was born in New York, and was 65 years of age at the time of his death. He came to California [1861], and eight years later settled in Gilroy. He was one of the oldest stage drivers in the county, having driven the stage from Alviso to Santa Cruz in early days for a number of years. He was a great lover of fine horses, and his "Brown Jug Stables" had a State reputation. He was one of the organizers of the Gilroy Driving Park Association, being in charge of the late Jas. P. Sargent's fine string of horses. As a trainer of race horses he had no superior in this section of the State. Kind hearted and gentle in his relations with man and beast, he was universally respected. Mr. Love leaves his widow, to whom he was married in [1868]. She has tenderly nursed him during his long illness, as only a devoted wife is capable of administering. He has no relatives in California. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon. Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, and interment was in the I.O.O.F. and Masonic Cemetery. There were many beautiful floral pieces. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Hecker, Wentz, S. T. Moore, C. P. Weldon, Plunkett, and Milias.
