Obituary
Laverne "Babe" F. Bechtold, 87, of Godfrey, passed away on October 10, 2023, in Alton, IL. He was born on March 11, 1936 to the late John and Mary (Wendel) Bechtold in Elsah, IL. On June 20, 1959, Babe married the love of his life, Sharon Selkirk at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. She preceded him in death on January 21, 2020.

He began working as a mechanic from the age of 17 for over 55 years. Babe joined the Air Force where he worked as a diesel mechanic. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union and worked for Granite City Steel for many years. Babe was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton as well as the Alton Knights of Columbus Council 460. He enjoyed fishing and grabbing a fish sandwich with his son at O Jan's Fish Stand in Grafton. Babe also volunteered at the Crisis Food Center for many years.

Babe is survived by his son, Michael Bechtold of Alton, IL; grandchildren, Chris Bechtold, Corey (Brittany) Bechtold, Abigail Martinez, and Jennifer Martinez; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Sean, Lucas, Maverick, and Levi; and a brother, John "Bud" (Eliane) Bechtold of NY.

Along with his parents and wife, Sharon Bechtold, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Dana Martinez; and siblings, Edith Rathgeb, Marie Bregenzer, Catherine Estrada, Edward Bechtold, Leo Bechtold, Eleanor Smith, and Helen Bechtold.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 4 pm to 6 pm at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton, Illinois.


Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 10 am, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton, with Father Jeff Holtman O.F.S., officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
