United States Astronaut. She was a National Aeronautics and Space Administration mission specialist crewmember of the Space Shuttle Columbia when it disintegrated in orbit around the Earth on February 1, 2003. Born Karnal, Punjab, India, she held a Ph.D in aerospace engineering when she began working for NASA in 1988. She had flown aboard the Columbia during its November 1997 mission, becoming the first woman of Indian origin to fly in space. She was one of seven NASA astronauts to be killed during its January-February 2003 mission when debris struck the ship and caused it to explode.
