Nicola (Mickey) Chine Harbeson died April 15, 2008, at home surrounded by her family.

Mickey and her husband, Bill, were longtime residents of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. She was born on Sept. 11, 1934, and raised in the Brier Hill community of Youngstown, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Harbeson; infant son, Butch; her parents, Carmel DeFabio and Joseph Chine; brother, Louis Chine; and sister, Kay Chine Stokes.

She is survived by her daughters, Terri Roberts and husband Mike, and Melli Pappas and husband Johnny; her grandchildren, Megan Roberts, Trae Pappas, Shannon Roberts and Nikki Pappas, all of Fort Walton Beach; father, Ralph DeFabio; sister, Connie Protich; brother, Ralph DeFabio Jr. of Youngstown, Ohio; nieces and nephews, whom she loved like her own children, Judy Stokes, Jenny Stokes Petrillo, Janet Stokes Chalk, J.R. Stokes, Louis Chine, Jeff Chine, Mark Chine, Jude Chine Muse, Joe Chine, Chrissy Chine, Toni Protich Rozzi, Greg Protich, Kathleen DeFabio Yates, Ronnie DeFabio and Michelle DeFabio. She was especially close to her brother-in-law, Randy Stokes. She dearly loved Alice Rodgers, her friend and caregiver.

She met her husband Bill when she was serving active duty at Lackland Air Force Base. Bill and Mickey moved back to Bill's hometown of Fort Walton Beach in 1956, where they raised their family. She was a devout Catholic and founding member of Saint Peter Catholic Church. Mickey was involved in numerous civic organizations. She was a talented artist and enjoyed many different artistic mediums, with her favorite being china painting. She served as Billy Bowlegs Queen XXI with then Captain Billy Bowlegs, Dr. William Thompson. Mickey and her friend, Helen Wise, opened the Book Rack in 1981, and she worked there with her daughter, Melli, until this past November when her illness prevented her from working. Mickey loved her bookstore and the people she met there.

"Family" was the most important thing in Mickey's life. However, family did not mean only blood relatives. She had many close friends whom she considered part of her "family." She was generous, selfless and loving to all. Holidays and special occasions were her favorite time, when she opened her home to everyone she loved. A special thanks to her many friends who loved and supported her throughout her illness.

Pallbearers are Louis Chine, Mark Chine, Jeff Chine, J.R. Stokes, Jake Muse, Ryan Petrillo, Jeffrey Rozzi and Ronnie DeFabio.

Flower arrangements are accepted and/or donations may be made in Mickey's memory to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633 (www.alz.org) or Covenant Hospice, 101 Hart St., Niceville, FL 32578.

Visitation will take place on Friday, April 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, 100 Francis St., Mary Esther, Fla. A rosary will be said at 5 p.m. prior to the visitation.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery, Fort Walton Beach.
