Japanese educator. As a disciple of Yukichi Fukuzawa, he was one of the educators who built the foundation of modern education in Japan. He was the first president of Keio University. At the end of the Edo period, he also joined Enomoto's army and fought in the Boshin War with 95 men as a warship leader.
