Alice Jean Atkinson, 93 of Portage, peacefully passed away, November 8, 2023, at St. Clare Hospital Baraboo. She was born Oct. 2, 1930, in rural Cambria to William and Ruth Manthey Alice was sometimes called "Babe" by family and loved ones. She was united in marriage to Walter Atkinson on Feb 24, 1951, in Madison, WI. Baptized and confirmed at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cambria. She was an active member of several Lutheran Churches and a current member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage. She helped her husband find Jesus Christ and he was baptized and confirmed. She served as President for the Ladies Aide and a member of the LWML as zone treasurer, she also led the Ruth Bible study for over 30 years. She was a member of the VFW Post #1707 Ladies Auxiliary for many years and served as president for 4 years. She worked outside the home and was a dedicated Navy wife and Mother. Survivors include her children, Dolores Milton, James Atkinson, Ronald Atkinson, 5 grandchildren, Scott (Dannon) Milton, Mike (Amy) Milton, Casey (Travas) Busse, Kelsy (Zach) Copiskey, Amos Atkinson, 10 great grandchildren, Sister in-law Dorothy Olson, Sandy (Jim) Treptow, Brother-in-law Maurice (Rose) Atkinson and many other nephews and nieces and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter of 63 years; her parents, sister's Leila Healy and Irene (Harry) Patchin; brother Lester (Gladys) Manthey; parents-in-law Floyd and Violet Atkinson, brothers-in-law Earl Atkinson, Allen Olson, John (Connie) Atkinson, Donald Atkinson. A special thank you to Pastor Armon, Candice (comfort dog), Shirley, Brenda and all her caregivers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Portage with Pastor Armon officiating. Visitation will be held from 9am until time of service at the church. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portage.
