SHREVEPORT, LA – Martha Frances Jones-Rice, a prominent resident of Shreveport, LA, died Thursday, September 13, 2001 following a lengthy illness. She had been a partner in Jones Brothers Drilling Company with her late brothers, Carl Wiley Jones and James Marshall ‘Bubba' Jones. She was the daughter of the late Frances Ball Jones and Marshall Carl Jones, a pioneer Caddo Parish oilman.

The funeral service will be conducted by The Very Reverend M L Agnew, Jr at 10:00 am Monday, September 17, 2001 at St. Mark's Cathedral. Interment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 16, 2001 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home.

Born in Shreveport, LA on June 18, 1921, she was a graduate of C E Byrd High School and attended Stephens College and Louisiana State University where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She married Dr. Irwin Jefferson Rice, now deceased, on June 6, 1942. Martha will be remembered for her love of friends and family, her special joy for life and her wonderful gentle kindness toward all.

Martha hosted internationally famous young piano virtuosos who came to play in the Nena Plant Wideman Piano Competition held each year at Centenary College, and her family contributed the Rice Scholarship awarded annually at this event. She has been active in the Shreveport Symphony Guild, the Shreveport Opera Guild, the Sequela Study Club, the Era Club, the First Tuesday Book Club, St. Mark's Cathedral, the Demoiselle Club, the Holiday in Dixie Cotillion, the Woman's Department Club and was a member of the Shreveport Club. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Alumnae Association of Shreveport and served as Province President. For her service and contribution to Kappa Delta, she was recognized as an Emerald Lady.

She was predeceased by a son, Lane Jefferson Rice. Survivors are her twin sons, Marshall Carl Rice and his wife, Ellen Hyde Rice and James Alexander Rice and his wife, Susan Elgin Rice; grandchildren, John Marshall Rice, Joel Alexander Rice, Martha Frances Rice, Jennifer Elizabeth Rice, Susannah Elgin Rice, Mary Beth Rice and James Alexander Rice, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Claude Broome, Charles Thomas Cruse, David Stewart Jones, James Marshall Jones, Jr., Robert Myers McLean, Michael Anthony Pitman, Dr. Charles Jefferson Rice, Dr. Joe Crosby Rice, Vincent Douglas Rice, Jr and Winston Edward Rice.

Honorary pallbearers will be Winston Churchill Rice, Robert Don Evans and Walter Duvall George, Jr.
