Actress. She was best known for her character roles on television, film, and the theatrical stage during a career that spanned seven decades. She studied drama at Vassar College and was head of its drama club before graduating in 1951. She also studied at the Perry Mansfield School of the Theatre and with Sanford Meisner at the Group Theater. She started acting on the theatrical stage in the early 1950s and made her Broadway debut in 1955 in "The Skin of Our Teeth." She went on to have a long career on the Broadway stage and garnered seven Tony Award nominations, winning twice in both 1974 for featured actress in a play for Neil Simon's "The Doctor" and in 1995 for featured actress in a play for a revival of "The Heiress." She also made her television debut in 1955 on the series "Producers' Showcase." Her later television credits would include such series as "The Defenders," "Spencer," "Cheers," "Law & Order," "Sex and the City," "Tales from the Crypt," "The Simpsons," "The Closer," "Parenthood," and "ER." She earned three Emmy Award nominations for her appearances on "Cheers" and "Sex and the City." In 1967, she made her film debut in "Up the Down Staircase." She went on to appear in such films as "Outland," "Misery," "Raising Cain," "Highway," "Julie & Julia," and "Dolphin Tale."
