Madison "Matt" Davis was born enslaved about 1845 in Warren County, North Carolina to Henry and Lucinda Davis. Dr. Stephen Davis of Warrenton enslaved Madison and his family and bequeathed them to his sons, Hugh Davis and Peter Randolph Davis. Madison married Dionicia Davis, another person Dr. Stephen Davis enslaved, in May 1864. By 1870, the reportedly widowed Madison, a farmer, was the father of three infant daughters, Eveline, Mariah, and Rebecca.

On 22 January 1871, Madison married his second wife, the former Pattie Green, in North Carolina's Warren County. Pattie and Madison had at least 10 children together: William J., George, James, Madison Jr., Nathaniel, Nannie, Alice, Henry, young Pattie, and John. The growing family lived in the Ridgeway community before Madison Sr. and Pattie relocated with their younger children to Richmond, Virginia after June 1900.

Madison died on 7 Sep 1902 in Richmond, Virginia. His remains were interred in Evergreen Cemetery.
