Mildred Williams, 86, of Eddyville, died Monday, April 21, 2008, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
She was born on Oct. 28, 1921, in Eddyville to the late Elmer and Belle (Souheaver) Randolph. She was the fifth of nine children.
On Dec. 24, 1939, she married Eskel "Dugan" Williams of Eddyville. They spent their early years of marriage living at Tunnel Hill where Dugan worked in the peach orchards. From there they purchased a farm and moved back to Eddyville. Their home was always full of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. To this union were born two children, Danny Lee, who died at birth and Betty Jean, who survives.
In January 1966, they lost their farm to a fire and three days later Dugan died of a heart attack. Mildred was left with an eight-year-old daughter to raise and a house to rebuild. Along with the help of friends, neighbors, and family she rebuilt a house on the farm and raised cattle and hogs to support herself and her daughter.
In 1976, she went to work at A.L. Bowen Center in Harrisburg as a cook on the morning shift. Upon the closing of the Bowen Center, she transferred to the Vienna Correctional Center as a food supervisor. She worked there until her retirement in 1990.
She was an active member of the Eddyville Missionary Baptist Church and loved the fellowship of friends she had there. She loved to garden, especially her flowers, and loved to cook. You never left her house hungry. She adopted a silky terrier dog named Rusty, who was her best buddy. He was known as Betty Jean's brother. Her greatest joy was her grandson, Brad, and in the past two years her great-granddaughter, Briley.
In April 2006, she moved to Harrisburg with her daughter, where she spent the last two years enjoying the closeness of her family and her caregivers, Dusti Brannan, Lisa Hinant, Vicki Hinant, Kathy Seely and Marcia Hooten.
In addition to her parents and husband, two sisters and four brothers preceded her in death: Marie Barger, Beulah Dixon, Maxie Randolph, Virgil Randolph, Lenzie Randolph and Dean "Diz" Randolph.
Survivors are her daughter, Betty Jean Karnes; grandson, Bradley Karnes and fianc/e Keri Younger; and great-granddaughter, Briley Marie Karnes, all of Harrisburg; her sisters, Bernice Terpening of Hampton, Va. and Irene Bennett of West Chester; and one brother-in-law, Paul Barger of Eddyville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Eddyville Baptist Church. The Rev. Buddy Sork will officiate. Burial will be in Old Home Cemetery in Eddyville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April, 24, 2008, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Condolences may be sent to the family through the Obituary Page of the Internet site
