Dr. Dorman Charles Batson Jr., age 75, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away on
Monday, December 11th, 2023, from a lengthy illness. He grew up in Follansbee,
WV. He graduated from Follansbee High School in 1966, then earned a degree in
business from Marshall University. After graduation, he was drafted into the US
Military Army Division and was stationed at West Point Military Academy as a
military policeman. After his military service he worked at Wheeling Steel,
Benwood Plant. During this time, he completed a graduate degree from West
Virginia University. He then secured a job as a professor at Salem College in Salem,
WV. In 1989 he accepted a job at Montreat Anderson College, near Asheville, NC.
While at Montreat, he earned his doctorate degree from The Union Institute. In
1994, he was offered a chance to return to his home state of West Virginia by
accepting a job as a professor at Glenville State College. He taught at Glenville State
until he retired in 2016 and then moved to sunny Myrtle Beach, SC. After retiring,
he served as a volunteer at the Welcome Center at Brookgreen Gardens and was a
dossier at Hobcaw Barony.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 47 years Paula Wright Batson. As soul
mates, they shared many adventures together and made a home in several states
along the way. In each, they worked hard, learned many new things, they were able
to create a network of wonderful friends. He is survived by three children, Jennifer
Boyce Frodl, Wendy Batson Griffin and her husband Erick Griffin, and Mary Batson
Cantrell and her husband Brian Cantrell, seven grandchildren, Allison Frodl Tate and
her husband Austin Tate, Bella Griffin, Libbie Griffin, Maxwell Griffin, Tyler Mujica,
Micah Mujica, and Milo Mujica, and one great-grandchild, John Sawyer Tate.
He is preceded in death by his parents Dorman and Grace Batson and his two
sisters, Hazel Henry and Beverly Daugherty. He has a one surviving sister Joan
Roberts.
Dorman "Chuck" Batson was a Godly man that demonstrated kindness as a way of
life. He started each day reading the Bible and praying for his family and friends.
You would never find him without his notepad and pen making notes about ideas,
quotes, and facts. He is famous for sharing interesting trivia of every variety –
especially American history. He loved farming, hunting, being in the woods,
woodworking, watching Jeopardy, and walking along the beach with his wife and
dog Rosie.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 30,
2023 at Palmetto Point Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service
and a reception will follow. Bishop Jamie Barfield will be officiating.
