MERCEDES, Texas - Rosa Gómez Cantú, 92, passed away on December 27, 2023.

Rosa Cantú, Rosie, was born Rosa Gómez in Harlingen, Texas on August 9, 1931 to Miguel Torres Gómez and Teodora García Vela. She was the oldest of eight siblings and spent her childhood living in Poteet, Harlingen, and Mercedes, Texas. Rosa met the love of her life, José Mejía Cantú, in 1943, when they were both attending middle school in Mercedes, Texas. They courted for many years until they were happily married on April 6, 1956.

Rosa was a migrant worker during her childhood and worked several jobs while still in high school to support her family. She was the first in her family to go to college. She attended Baylor University and completed her nursing studies at Providence Hospital, both in Waco, Texas. While in nursing school she was awarded with the title of "Most Compassionate Nurse." During Rosa's career as a nurse, she touched innumerable lives all over the country. While living in the Valley she worked at the Harlingen State Tuberculosis Hospital, Valley Baptist Hospital, MHMR, Charter Palms Behavioral Hospital and McAllen Medical Center.

Rosa was proud Army-wife and later an Army-mother. With her husband José Mejía Cantú and their children, she lived countless adventures all over the United States. Together they raised a tight-knit military family in Texas, Alaska, Arizona, Virginia, and New Jersey before finally settling in their hometown of Mercedes along Rio Rico Rd and the Arroyo Colorado. In Rosa and José's retirement, they established Mercedes Memorial Restlawn Cemetery, where she worked for many years as Vice-President. She enjoyed building friendships, sharing stories and sharing plants with the many family members and loved ones of those ones buried at her family cemetery.

Rosa was an exceptional human being in almost every way. She was witty, hilarious, and wise. She was exquisitely graceful, patient, passionate, and down to earth. Rosa was a devoted wife and mother, a loyal daughter, granddaughter, sister, cousin, aunt, and friend. She was a compassionate nurse, a magical grandmother, a gardener, a seamstress, an artist, and a spiritualist. She was a philosopher and a humanist and was in so many ways, decades ahead of her time. As a life-time Army wife of a career soldier, she was also a strong ally to the local military veteran community.

Rosa loved life and had a strong fighting spirit. In her last years she experienced many trials of health with exceptional, almost super-human strength. Some may say Rosa's love of God, gardening, and grandchildren may have been her key to her longevity. If one were to ask her grandchildren however where her superpowers came from, they would probably say from the strength and love of Grandpa, Jose Mejía Cantú.

Rosa lovingly leaves behind her devoted husband, José Mejía Cantú and their five children, Joe (Nilda) Cantú; Mike Cantú; Pete Cantú; Janie Cantú-Cabrera (Fernando); and Rey Cantú (Susie) - In addition, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Rosa most regretfully leaves behind her youngest brother Ramiro, of McAllen, Texas; countless nieces, grand-nieces, cousins, in-laws, friends, and acquaintances across many generations are left to cherish Rosa's memory as well.

In death, Rosa is reunited with her parents, Teodora and Miguel Torres Gómez, as well as her grandparents Ángel Gómez and María Ballí Torres. In heaven, Rosa joins her beloved sisters Olivia and Oralia along with her brothers Miguel, Guadalupe, and Reymundo. She joins her loving mother-in-law María Guadalupe Mejía Cantú, and father-in-law José Navarro Cantú and the many other departed members of the Cantú - Gomez family.

Family will be accepting visitors at the Garcia & Treviño Funeral Home in Mercedes, Texas on December 28 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A rosary will be held on December 28 at 6 pm. Funeral mass will be officiated at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on December 29 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn Cemetery. Rosa's sons and grandsons will serve as her pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Treviño Funeral Home of Mercedes.
