A child of original homesteaders (Tommy and Ercil Woody Calahan), Betty was born at home on a snowy Easter morning, grew up in the homesteads, and graduated from Homestead School. She served as a First-Class Stewardess coast to coast for American Airlines until she married Pete on another Easter Sunday in 1961. Throughout her life in Crossville, she stayed active with administrative roles, various functions at Homestead Baptist Church, caring for her home, and always setting the example for compassion, grace, and devotion to her family through the forty-seven years of their marriage and beyond. The phrase "behind every good man is a good woman" fit her perfectly, as she diligently matched Pete's commitment to public service with her own inner strength and hospitality, always giving to others generously of her time and talents.
Betty loved spending time with family, hugging and cooking for her grandchildren, attending family gatherings, visiting friends in Crossville and later in Hixson, and sharing her faith.
Betty lived her last five years in McDonald, TN where she was a daily blessing to her family, sharing many laughs and memories. She continued to enjoy gardening, visiting with others, watching wildlife and birds, and volunteering at the local homeless shelter with Sam.
While Betty's health challenged her throughout her life, she never complained or gave up, remaining courageous, active, and in loving service to others. She would most want others to know how much she loved the Lord, and how eagerly she longed to be at her heavenly home.
Her family mourns her loss, yet rejoices that her journey is now complete, and she is joyfully reaping the treasures she laid up in heaven.
Services for Betty Stubbs will be Thursday, January 18, at 1 p.m., at Hood Funeral Home, and will be officiated by Rev. Jim McPherson. Family will be receiving friends from 11-1. For those wishing to attend virtually, the service will be live streamed by Tony Perry via the Hood Funeral Home Facebook Page.
