Mildred C. May, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the evening of April 21, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mildred was born September 04, 1913 to Abner Chipman and Elizabeth Bourne in American Fork, Utah. She was the sixth of eight children. She graduated from American Fork High School in 1931. She was the star of many musicals, plays and operas, where she received much acclaim. This culminated to her being accepted into the Utah Tabernacle Choir on June 03, 1940. In 1941 she traveled with the choir on their Pacific Coast tour performing at the Hollywood Bowl and the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. She married the love of her life, Joseph R. May in 1946 after his return from World War II. Mildred then became an active member of St. Marks Cathedral and choir. Mildred and Joe were blessed with one child; they were married for 14 wonderful years, before he died unexpectedly in 1959.

This was a turning point in Mildred's life. She raised a son on her own, sacrificing to make sure he had the best, she was a dedicated and loving mother. She took on many new responsibilities, including starting a career, learning to drive and balancing the checkbook. She became the head secretary at Riley Elementary in Salt Lake City, where she received many outstanding honorary awards. Mildred was known for keeping her home and yard on Laird Avenue in immaculate shape. She enjoyed many happy hours gardening in her yard. Mildred led a very active life; she was a Crimson Club member and a huge U of U fan. She was an officer in the Eastern Star. She played in two bridge clubs and bowled well into her eighties. Mildred's family meant the world to her. Mildred was an independent, feisty woman and her exuberance for life shined through her. We will dearly miss her love and attentive loyalty.

She is survived by her son, Joseph R. May Jr. (Salt Lake City), grandson, Joseph (Tina) May III and two great-grandchildren, Miles and Mia May (Salt Lake City). Also survived by sister, Phyllis Taylor (Lehi, UT.) and brother, Curtis Chipman (Arlington, VA.) and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, parents, sisters, Pearl Laursen, Bernice Pulley, and Mary Ann Wilhite and brothers Abner and Mark Chipman.
