Former Archbishop of Poznań, Monsignor Antoni Baraniak SDB., was born on January 1, 1904, in Sebastianowo, Poland, was ordained to the priesthood through the Order of the Salesians of Saint John Bosco at 26 years of age on August 3, 1930, following studies in Krakow, Warsaw and Rome, by Cardinal Adamo Stefano Sapieha, in the Carmelite church of Krakow. Successively, he served among others as chaplain and private secretary to the Polish Primate Cardinal Augustus Hlond SDB., between 1933 and 1948, facing the difficult period of the Second World War which Poland suffered under the Nazi occupation and later under Communism.

At the age of 47, on April 26, 1951, Pope Pius XII appointed Baraniak Auxiliary for the See Gniezno, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Theodosiopolis in Armenia on the following July 8, from Cardinal Wyszynski assisted by Bishops Tadeusz Pawel Zakrzewski and Lucjan Bernacki.

At the age of 53, following the death of Archbishop Walenty Dymek, Pope Pius XII named Msgr. Baraniak, Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Poznań, a position he held until his demise, which occurred after a prolonged illness on August 20, 1977, at 73 years of age.

His episcopal motto was the famous St. John Bosco's saying "Da Mihi Animas - Caetera Tolle".
