Alex Rice, 88, of 701 Elmwood St., a well-known Shreveport independent oil operator for many years before his retirement, died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at his residence following a long illness.

[A large ink blot on page obliterated two lines of type] . . . had lived in the Shreveport area for 50 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the El Karubah Shrine and the Mooringsport Masonic Lodge. He was the father of the late Vincent D Rice Sr. of Shreveport.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Marshall Street Chapel of the Rose-Neath Funeral Home with Dr. D L Dykes, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow; two sons, Winston C Rice and Dr. Irwin J Rice, both of Shreveport, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be M. Carl Jones, Dayton Waller Sr., Paul Dale Waller, Frank Van Cleve, Dr. William Harwell, Jack Elgin, James M.Jones, Carl W.Jones, J. B.Haynes, Jr, W.T.Graham, Walter Hammann, Dr. Sanders Fowler, Sr., Arch Haynes and Frank Coughlin.
