Albertine was born in Ohio to German immigrant parents. She married Epenetus Barnisel in 1891 and they lived in San Francisco before settling in Mayfield and Purisima (modern-day Palo Alto/Los Altos) where he worked as a farmer. They had two children, Ira and Florence - who died young.
