Sometime between 1904 and 1910, Rufus left his wife and 4 small children in Stonewall Co., Texas. The family did not hear from him again until about 1933 when he just showed up in Hall Co., Texas where his children (now grown) were living with their families. He stayed with A.J. (Dock) Fowler and his family for about a month and then left again. He shows up in the 1910 and 1920 censuses in Arkansas, unmarried and living as a boarder. He does not show up in the 1930 census.
He was run over by a car and killed in Waxahachie, Texas in 1936. The A.J. Fowler were in Memphis, Texas on Saturday, and it was announced over the loud speaker system at the courthouse for some of the family to get a message. A.J. went to Waxahachie alone for the burial.
