Biography by David Travillion Bunton

Hugh Ross was born ca 1735 and was living in Albmarle County Virginia by the 1760s. His wife was Sarah Stockton, daughter of Richard Stockton and wife Agnes.

Hugh Ross and wife Sarah sold 170 acres to John Cambell on June 20, 1764. (Augusta County, Va Deed book 11 page 645).

The eldest daughter of Hugh Ross and Sarah Stockton was named Agnes Ross, born in 1756 in Virginia who married Thomas Kennedy. The youngest daughter of Hugh Ross and Sarah Stockton was Anne Ross, called Fanny. In her marriage bond she was referred to as Anne Dove, because of her stepfather Francis Dove, who had married Sarah Stockton Ross, after the death of Hugh Ross Sr. Two of the sons of Hugh Ross and Sarah Stockton were Hugh Ross Jr and Isaac Ambrose Ross (commonly called Ambrose). In a book entitled History and Genealogies by W. H. Miller

privately published in Kentucky in 1907: "Deposition taken on Silver Creek, March 3, 1787, before John Boyle, Commissioner of the Court. Deponent, Ambrose Ross, sworn, testifies relative to land entered by John Kennedy on which old man Ross lived, and Kennedy was to give Ross part of

it." The "old man Ross" referred to by Ambrose Ross in this discussion of the land of John Kennedy (Jr?) must refer to Hugh Ross Sr who had come to Kentucky very early, settling in Lincoln County, Kentucky in the area later known as Garrard County.
