Biography of Leannah Ross Clark, wife of James Clark by David Travillion Bunton

Leannah Ross (or spelled Leyanna Ross per her marriage records) was born ca 1774 in Virginia and married James Clark in Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1792 (bond dated on 10 July 1792) with her mother Sarah Ross giving permission to marry. Leannah Ross was the daughter of Hugh Ross Sr and Sarah Stockton. After the death of Hugh Ross SR, the widow Sarah Stockton Ross married Francis Dove, who became the stepfather of Leyanna Ross. Francis Dove was a bondsman for the groom James Clark and attested to the permission along with Hugh Ross (brother of Leyanna) when Sarah Ross gave permission for her daughter to marry on 12 July 1792. Leyanna Ross Clark was the younger sister of Ann Ross Preston who married William Preston in 1793 also in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Ann, known as Fanny, and her husband William Preston left Rockcastle County, Kentucky (originally a part of Lincoln County, KY) and removed to Cannon County, Tennessee


The 1830 Bond County, Illinois census shows James Clarke (Clark) aged 60 to 69 with a female aged 50 to 59 (ie born 1771 to 1780). Previous to this census, the family lived in Wayne County, Kentucky.
