Chemist. He "invented" the drug LSD (lysergic acid diethylamid) in 1938 while experimenting with medicinal plants, including ergot fungus (from rye kernels), but the effects of it were not known until five years later after he accidently ingested some. He also synthesized methergine, which is a medicine used to treat postpartum hemorrhaging. Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland. In addition to teaching and lab work he wrote scores of articles and books. His 100th birthday in 2006 was marked by an international symposium on LSD.
