John, later a Secretary of State and the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, served as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Virginia Infantry (1775) and a Captain the 11th Virginia Infantry (1776-1780). During his military service, he developed a friendship with his commander-in-chief, General George Washington. Marshall was present during the legendary winter at Valley Forge (1777-1778) and also took part in the battles of Brandywine (1777) and Monmouth (1778).
