Obituary

Lucious Hawkins, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 9 at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Macon by the Rev. Preston Williams, officiating, and the Rev. Will C. Tabron, eulogist. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hawkins, son of the late William Marion and Willie Solomon Hawkins, was born Oct. 8, 1927 in Halifax County. He was a graduate of Weldon High School.

A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Hawkins was stationed in Germany and received the Medal of Honor.

He attended St. Paul's Polytechnic Institute in Lawrenceville, Va. and graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in business education. Mr. Hawkins worked with the United States government in Washington, D.C., later earning a master's degree in school administration from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Fayetteville.

In June 1956, he married the former Lillie Gertrude Faulkner of Macon.

Mr. Hawkins was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Macon, serving as a deacon, treasurer, adult Sunday school teacher, financial secretary, trustee and president of the Senior Choir.

He was employed with Warren County Schools from 1961-1990, working as teacher/principal at Cool Springs Elementary School in the Afton community; science/math teacher and counselor at John R. Hawkins Junior High School in Warrenton; and teacher, assistant principal and principal at South Warren Elementary School.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by five sisters, Sadie Pettiford, Will Faulcon, Mandine Gray, Mazil Jones and Virginia Smith; three brothers, Julius Hawkins, Willo Hawkins and Nello Hawkins.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Gertrude of the home; a daughter, Germaine of Raleigh; a son, William Lucious of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Lois Barkley of Halifax; two brothers, John Rasenwald of Washington, D.C. and Quincy of Weldon. (The Warren Record online, 19 Nov 2008)
