Julia Elizabeth was the daughter of Charles McKernin & Catherine (McDonald) McKernin. She was born in Miramichi, New Brunswick and lived in New Hampshire before moving to Monson, MA with her parents. Julia married Henry Eugene Fenner on June 28, 1890 in Monson. They had the following children: Jennie, Charles Francis (who died of internal injuries from an automobile accident in Vermont), Harry James, Edward Raymond, Essex William, Bessie, Lloyd and Luther. At the time of her death, Julia's last surviving brother Edward was living in Brooklyn.

Her children were placed in an orphanage after the untimely death of Henry Eugene. She took them our of the orphanage when she married Arthur W. Hamilton on June 26, 1907 in Spencer, Mass. After his death, she married Herman Reuter on June 10, 1911 in Worcester. Finally, after several years, she married Herbert S. Prentiss, who was a minister. Her obit refers to her as Julia Prentiss.

The family has a postcard written by Julia and one grandson remembers that she liked to take care of plants. Another grandson, Duffy McGinnis, writes, "she was a great lady--A strict person---she tolerated no nonsense but she always kept a bowl of cookies in the center of her dining room table for us. When her sons were grown men she still insisted they say 'yes maam' and 'no maam' and they obeyed her without question".
